Ruby Utility creation

Alright, so I’m on my Ubuntu desktop, and I love the Gnome Desktop. I love it a lot more better then the KDE desktop. But one of the features that I’ve tried out on the new KDE4 desktop, was the whole everything is an applet deal. It’s nice, to a point. But I still like the simplicity of Panels, and Avant Window Navigator. But I was missing out on the extra applets that you could put on your desktop.
So I installed Screenlets. It’s a python based system, much like AWN, which allows you to put all kinds of nice stuff on your desktop, such as CPU Usage, RAM Usage, IP Address, and even the Weather. One of the applets that is missing though, is a command like top. TOP gives you the basic breakdown of all the programs running on your computer, including ram, and CPU Usage breakdown. In other words, you know what program is doing what. (continue reading…)
Downfall of Microsoft
by Mario Steele on May.07, 2009, under Linux
The most gleeful words that could ever be written by yours truly. It’s been a growing trend, that Linux has been growing more and more user friendly. Amongst the top 3 distros that I can state for certain are very user friendly, are Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS and Fedora. People have stated time and time again amongst the most avid computer geeks out there, that the time of the Penguin is at hand. And it may very well be true!
As reported here, governments are starting to see the true value of Linux over Windows. What’s even more significant, is the monetary value that has been stated within the article. 50 million Euros. In US Dollar value, that’s close to 67 Million dollars, that the French have been able to save by switching to Linux, over Windows. And I’m guessing that’s only a third of the computer workstations that the French police use every day.
The more that people are exposed to Linux, the more that people will come to find out the true power of Linux, and the actual Simplicity of it. Many different communities have worked to bring together distros that allow a more easy exchange between Windows, and Linux. And the components that make up Linux, have gotten more and more robust. A lot more hardware that was hard to get access to on Linux a few years ago, are now becoming more common place.
More hardware developers are creating Linux drivers for use of their hardware. More developers are researching the hardware that was once incompatible with Linux at one time, are developing drivers that actually work for the system. People are finding out that freedom of choice, actually comes with Linux. Your not restricted to one Shell, one GUI Interface, one design. That you can create just about any interface that you want. Many were afraid that this freedom of choice would make Linux a downfall, I see it as a uptake.
Not only that, but people are finding out more, that there are still common threads between all Linux distros, that are common, no matter how different each system is made, that there are just the most simple way of maintaining the system. Not to mention that the tools that are used to maintain the system, actually operate very similar, but only have a few tweaks here and there.
So prepare your self, Linux is going strong, and won’t die out so easily, as Microsoft would like you to believe.

Alright, so, I’ve been gone for a while now, and needed to get some things put together. Now, I have restarted my blog, so that I can start writting some stuff about things I’ve found, experience in both programming, and Linux, and so forth. So I will be trying to post to this blog once more. Once again, I’ve returned, so watch for more stuff to come.
